"I HOPE IT'S OK"

by
Me (Elaine), artwork by my husband Gilles

I went back to my home town for a visit last autumn.
I stayed at my best friend's house.
We stayed up late and talked about technicolor memories,
of when we were very young.
We drank earl grey tea and ate home made bread.
We talked about how lonely life was before God.
We ate a whole can of pringles.

I said, "I hope you don't mind...
that I always want to keep you
in a safe place inside me
where best friends stay forever.
I hope it's ok
if I ask you to stay close to me
in a secret place
where only I know where you are
just in case...

I hope it's ok
that you're my best friend
and it's you and it's me.
and I hope it's ok
if I keep you in a secret place
where only I know where you are
just in case there's trolls around
that eat best friends.
